Midterm Conference

Contemporary cities are spaces and places traversed by a diversity of movements, making them very special locus for analysing society. The ESA’s Research Network 37 – Urban Sociology- coordination team is working to stimulate scientific debate within the area of urban sociology. In times of digital information, conferences are very important spaces to debate current issues, showcase emerging research and discuss new approaches. The ESA Research Network 37 – Urban Sociology – Midterm Conference will take place at the Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland, June, 29th- July, 1st, 2016.

ABS Europe Conference 2016

In 2016 the biannual European Conference of the Association for Borderland Studies (ABS) will be hosted by the University of Luxembourg. The Conference will take place at the Belval campus, in close proximity to the French- Luxembourg border, and in cooperation with the University of the Greater Region (UniGR) – a confederation of six universities from Luxembourg (University of Luxembourg), Germany (University of Kaiserslautern, Saarland University, University of Trier), France (University of Lorraine), and Belgium (University of Liège). The conference is thematically connected to the 30-year anniversary of the Schengen Agreement, which was signed in the Luxembourg village of Schengen. The conference wants to test the vision of a ‘Europe without borders’, by considering questions that focus on mobility, diversity, responsibility and change from a multidisciplinary perspective. The questioning should consider differences as well as discontinuities in a spatial, social and temporal perspective.

Aufgrund hoher Zuwandererzahlen wächst die Bevölkerung in Deutschland gegenwärtig wieder , nachdem in den 2000er Jahren stagnierende oder leicht sinkende Bevölkerungszahlen zu verzeichnen waren. Das Wachstum konzentriert sich auf prosperierende Großstädte und Ballungsräume, während strukturschwache Regionen weiter Einwohner verlieren.

Prozesse der Verdichtung wie der Entdichtung üben Druck auf die Akteure aus, Institutionen und Infrastrukturen den veränderten Verhältnissen anzupassen. Über die Anpassungsnotwendigkeiten hinausgehend stellt sich die Frage nach den Möglichkeiten gestaltender E inwirkung auf der längerfristigen Bevölkerungsentwicklung, die neben der Migration und der Entwicklung der Lebenserwartung vor allem durch die Fertilität bestimmt wird.

Building Bridges: Cities and Regions in a Transnational World

Throughout history, cities and regions have been cornerstones of economic, social and cultural institution building and centres of communication and trade across borders of empires and nations. In a globalised world dominated by multi-level governance and declining economic and political significance of the nation-state, cities and regions are becoming ever more so important in building bridges across nations, supra-national unions, and even continents.

These challenges surpass the usual aspects of integration: it is not sufficient to reduce barriers for the mobility of labour, goods, services and capital, to create a homogenous competitive environment, and a solid monetary system. What is needed in addition are more elements of a new regionalism, which is based on non-hierarchical relationships, on self-government, and on the creation of flexible alliances leading to interregional transnational cooperation. The development of a region is affected by its competitive and complementary relationships with other increasingly distant regions.

Ziel des Workshops ist es, vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen Debatte neue Konzepte des Vergleichs in der Stadtforschung zu diskutieren. Der Call richtet sich an Doktoranden und Postdocs, die ihre qualitativ oder quantitativ empirischen oder theoretischen Arbeiten vorstellen und diskutieren möchten.

Der Workshop findet am 5.-6.11.2015 am Leibniz-Institut für Länderkunde in Leipzig statt.

HINTERGRUND DER TAGUNG

Das Fachgebiet Stadterneuerung und Stadtumbau am Fachbereich Architektur, Stadtplanung, Landschaftsplanung der Universität Kassel veranstaltet in Kooperation mit dem Arbeitskreis Stadterneuerung an deutschsprachigen Hochschulen am 02./03.07.2015 in Kassel seine jährliche Stadterneuerungstagung zum Thema „25 Jahre: Jahrbuch Stadterneuerung – Bilanz und Ausblick“. Dafür werden interessante Beiträge gesucht, die auf der Tagung vorgestellt und anschließend im einem Jubiläumsband zum Jahrbuch Stadterneuerung veröffentlicht werden, das seit 1990/1991 regelmäßig vom Arbeitskreis Stadterneuerung herausgegeben wird. 

At the 2015 annual conference of the Regional Studies Association, Kai Böhme of Spatial Foresight organises a special session on the Europe 2020 Strategy and the role of regions and cities. This special session seeks papers examining practical examples as well as theoretical approaches of a regional and local perspective of the Europe 2020 Strategy (possible also just in single policy sectors). „Stadt Land Schaf(f)t – Land Schaf(f)t Stadt“ – so lautet das Motto des Deutschen Kongresses für Geographie (DKG) 2015, der im Oktober 2015 in Berlin stattfindet. PD Dr.-Ing. Thomas Weith und Dr.-Ing. Christian Strauß leiten zusammen mit Partnern zwei Fachsitzungen. Für beide Fachsitzungen werden Präsentationen gesucht.

Thomas Weith organisiert die Fachsitzung „Wissen-schaf(f)t-Landschaft!“, die auf den Wandel vom (Geo-) Informations- zum Wissensmanagement fokussiert und praktische innovative Handlungsansätze mit Blick auf die Analyse und Steuerung von Landnutzungswandel diskutiert.

Die Konzentration verschiedener sozialer Ungleichheiten macht urbane Räume auf ganz unterschiedliche Weise zu Schauplätzen sozialer Konflikte. Historisch wie aktuell sind sie Austragungsort für Massendemonstrationen und andere Aktionsformen von Protestbewegungen, und immer wieder auch für sogenannte /riots/: Jugendaufstände in marginalisierten Vierteln europäischer Metropolen, /food riots/ als Proteste gegen steigende Lebensmittelpreise in Städten des globalen Südens und ritualisierte Kämpfe zwischen linken Gruppierungen und staatlichen Ordnungsinstitutionen sind einige Beispiele hierfür. Trotz der unterschiedlichen Kontexte, in denen /riots/ stattfinden, werden ihnen gemeinhin Charakteristika wie Spontanität, Unorganisiertheit und Gewalt zugeschrieben.<(p>
