The ARL thrives on the active participation of committed experts from academia, practice, politics and society. Those who participate contribute their expertise and perspectives and help to develop solutions to current challenges in spatial development.
Who can participate?
Participation in the ARL is aimed at:
- Scientists from spatial science disciplines
- Practitioners from planning, administration, politics and civil society
- Young professionals in the field of spatial development
- People with experience in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary cooperation
Participation is possible in various formats – from occasional involvement to long-term integration into the ARL network.
How does participation work?
The following opportunities for participation are available:
- Working formats on current topics (via calls for membership or your own proposal)
- Regional and specialist dialogue forums for exchange, transfer and networking (e.g. via calls for membership, invitation as a guest)
- Next Generation Forum for young graduates in the field of spatial development
- Project-related cooperation with universities, administrations or institutions
- Participation in thematic panels, conferences and events (e.g. via calls for abstracts)
- Contribution to publications, recommendations or transfer products (e.g. via calls for special issues)
What are the benefits of participation?
Those who participate in the ARL become part of a dedicated network of around 800 active experts, in addition to the elected members. The exchange with other specialists opens up new perspectives, inspires further development of one's own work and creates points of contact for future cooperation – in research, practice or teaching.
Cooperation in the ARL is characterised by co-creation: experts from different disciplines and fields of activity work together at the interface between theory and practice. This open, collegial form of knowledge production gives rise to new perspectives, innovative approaches and a sustainable learning process for all involved.

How to become a member of the Academy (MdA)?
After a period of active participation, a person may be elected as a member of the Academy (MdA). This form of membership is associated with special professional recognition and enables permanent integration into the network.

- Arbeitsformate zu aktuellen Themen (über Calls for Membership oder eigenen Vorschlag)
- Regionale und fachliche Dialogforen für Austausch, Transfer und Netzwerkarbeit (z.B. über Calls for Membership, Einladung als Gast)
- Forum Nachwuchs für Absolvent:innen im Bereich der Raumentwicklung

Was bringt das Engagement in der ARL?
Wer in der ARL mitwirkt, wird Teil eines engagierten Netzwerks mit durchgängig rund 750 aktiv mitwirkenden Expert:innen, zusätzlich zu den gewählten Mitgliedern. Der Austausch mit anderen Fachpersonen eröffnet neue Perspektiven, inspiriert zur Weiterentwicklung der eigenen Arbeit und schafft Anknüpfungspunkte für künftige Kooperationen – in Forschung, Praxis oder Lehre.
Die Zusammenarbeit in der ARL ist geprägt von Co-Kreation: Fachpersonen aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen und Handlungsfeldern arbeiten gemeinsam an der Schnittstelle von Theorie und Praxis. Durch diese offene, kollegiale Form der Wissensproduktion entstehen neue Sichtweisen, innovative Ansätze und ein nachhaltiger Lernprozess für alle Beteiligten.

Wie wird man Mitglied der Akademie (MdA)?
Nach längerer aktiver Mitwirkung kann eine Person als Mitglied der Akademie (MdA) gewählt werden. Diese Form der Mitgliedschaft ist verbunden mit einer besonderen fachlichen Anerkennung und ermöglicht eine dauerhafte Einbindung in das Netzwerk.
