Working groups, ad hoc working groups and European working groups
With its various working formats, the ARL offers structured platforms for the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary examination of spatial issues:
Working Groups (AK) und International Working Groups (IAK)
AK and IAK focus on clearly defined issues from science and practice with a spatial reference. They are based on the ARL's research concept. International working groups deal with issues of European or cross-border relevance and contribute to international expert debates and comparative synthesis knowledge.

European Working Groups (EWG)
EWG promote the international networking of the ARL. They create permanent, transdisciplinary platforms for addressing cross-border issues of spatial development and planning in Europe. The aim is to further develop theory, methodology and concepts and to provide international policy advice in the field of spatial development.

Setup and composition
AK and IAK are initiated through a competitive process. Interested parties submit a specific research and work programme; see also > Suggest topics and formats. Ad hoc AK are appointed directly by the Presidium, but can also be proposed.
EWG also undergo a competitive selection process with the submission of a work programme.
The members of all formats are selected via an open call for membership (taking into account professional excellence and diversity) and appointed by the Presidium:
- AK/IAK: up to 12 members
- Ad hoc AK: individual composition by the Presidium
- EWG: up to 20 members, appointment for five years (reappointment possible)
Working method and duration
The working formats are freely designed in terms of their working and transfer formats. As a rule, two meetings are held per year, supplemented by digital formats.
All groups work on the basis of rules of procedure. Interim reports and programme budgets ensure a focus on results.
- AK and IAK: maximum term of 3 years
- Ad hoc AK: maximum term of 1 year
- EWG: permanent, regular review by the Presidium
