Spatial transformation in times of multiple crises

The ARL is strategically focusing its work in the period 2023–2028 on the key topic of Spatial transformation in times of multiple crises. The focus is on systematically examining the complex interactions between crises with spatial impact – such as climate change, the energy transition, socio-spatial inequality and digitalisation – and the resulting demands on planning, politics and science.

The aim is to link basic research, practical policy advice and spatial management and to develop them further in a solution-oriented manner.

Missions - Thematic priorities with a strategic focus

Since 2025, the ARL has been managing its work through missions. These thematically focused priorities are geared towards pressing social challenges that require interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary cooperation.

For 2025 and 2026, the focus will initially be on two missions:

Mission Water - including resource conflicts, climate adaptation and governance

Mission Infrastructure(s) - with a focus on public services, resilience and the transformation of existing systems

Specific work and transfer formats are being developed for both topics in order to promote cooperation across disciplinary boundaries and intensify dialogue with actors from politics and practice.
