Research Network Publishes “10 Must-Knows” on Biodiversity

The “10 Must-Knows” on Biodiversity are based on an assessment of nature as the foundation of human life. They were prepared by 45 scientists from the Leibniz Biodiversity Research Network and their colleagues.

Ahead of the UN Biodiversity Conference in Kunming, China, the report is intended to foster dialogue and put forward concrete policy recommendations.

"If we continue as we have been, we will destroy the foundations of life on this planet," explains Kirsten Thonicke from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, who coordinates the research network. "It is important not to focus narrowly on individual phenomena, such as a single endangered species, but to consider the broader connections. In the end, it’s about our air to breathe, our water to drink. We want to encourage action on these challenges. The longer we hesitate, the harder and more expensive it will become—there are clear parallels here to climate issues."

The ‘10 Must-Knows’ relate to 10 central demands of the scientists from the research network.”

  1. Implement climate and biodiversity protection together
  2. Strengthen planetary health
  3. Consider invisible biodiversity
  4. Promote biocultural habitats
  5. Use forests sustainably
  6. Transform agriculture
  7. Protect land and resources
  8. Expand transnational infrastructure and education for sustainability
  9. Ensure access to and open use of research data
  10. Set biodiversity-friendly incentives
