Research field I deals with spatial crises and structural problems in society and the economy. The aim is to develop approaches for socio-spatial transformation that are geared towards sustainability, resilience and justice and contribute to creating sustainable, good and healthy living conditions for all people.
Research field II deals with the issues raised from the perspective of socio-ecological spatial development in the context of climate change, the energy transition and integrated approaches to securing open spaces, biodiversity and ecosystem protection.
Research field III analyses the practical and theoretical aspects of this governance and brings them together. On the one hand, the focus is on actor constellations and power relations in different planning systems - also in international comparison. On the other hand, it focuses on the strategic and instrumental implementation of socio-ecological transformations and the legal planning obligations affected by them.
Research field IV is concerned with reflecting on the ARL's working methods and understanding of science in the wider context of spatial research and spatial development. In particular, the recording, analysis and evaluation of the effects of ARL activities are a central focus. Reflection on its role in the current scientific system and its history are also focussed on.
The ARL - Academy for Territorial Development of the Leibniz Association is made up of excellent experts from science and practice.
Together, we develop forward-looking knowledge for the design of sustainable spaces. We work in an inter- and transdisciplinary manner and address social challenges from a spatial perspective. Our knowledge transfer begins with the first working meeting - co-operative, practical and impact-oriented.

Call for Proposals: New topics for working groups and transfer formats within the framework of the ARL missions
Which current spatial issues should be addressed in an interdisciplinary and/or transdisciplinary manner? Which topics deserve in-depth scientific examination – with a clear reference to practice and social impact? The ARL is calling for proposals for new working groups and transfer formats within the framework of its ongoing missions and current research concept. The deadline is 25 March 2026.
How can spatial planning and development foster sustainable and just transformations?
Wie können räumliche Transformationen so gestaltet werden, dass sie soziale und ökologische Gerechtigkeit fördern? Welche Rolle spielen Geschlechterverhältnisse und andere Machtstrukturen in der Planung und Entwicklung von Städten und Regionen? Und wie lässt sich Wissen aus Forschung, Politik und Planungspraxis zusammenführen, um transformative Veränderungen anzustoßen?
Mit diesen Fragen beschäftigt sich das internationale Forum Gender and Spatial Transformation der ARL – Akademie für Raumentwicklung in der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft. Das nun veröffentlichte Mission Statement reflektiert den inter- und transdisziplinären Ansatz des Forums und erarbeitet ein gemeinsames Verständnis zentraler Begriffe und Konzepte für die künftige Zusammenarbeit. Darüber hinaus formuliert es den Anspruch, intersektionale Geschlechterperspektiven konsequent in räumliche Transformationsprozesse zu integrieren. Das Mission Statement macht deutlich: Geschlecht ist nicht nur eine individuelle Eigenschaft, sondern ein strukturelles Phänomen, das gesellschaftliche Machtverhältnisse, räumliche Planung und Entwicklung und damit auch unsere räumliche Umgebung prägt. Das Forum Gender and Spatial Transformation setzt sich zum Ziel, bestehende Machtverhältnisse kritisch zu hinterfragen und neue Wege für eine inklusive, nachhaltige Raumentwicklung aufzuzeigen.
Indo-German Knowledge Exchange on Regional Spatial Planning in Germany
Following a visit to the ARL Headquarters by Indian experts on 18 December 2025, during which there was a stimulating exchange of views on spatial planning and regional planning specifics in Germany and India, ARL President Axel Priebs was invited to give a presentation on regional planning in the Hanover region as part of the Indian Urban Knowledge Webinar Series.
Invitation to the MORO Regional Park Results Workshop
Das Modellvorhaben „Regionalparks – Strategien zur Freiraum- und Landschaftsentwicklung in Verdichtungsräumen“ hat zum Ziel, das informelle Instrument des Regionalparks zur Sicherung, Steuerung und Gestaltung von Landschaften und Freiräumen in suburbanen Verdichtungsräumen weiterzuentwickeln.
Wir möchten Sie herzlich am 30. September (12.00 Uhr bis 17.00 Uhr) in das Besucherzentrum des Regionalparks RheinMain in Flörsheim/Main einladen, bei dem wir gemeinsam mit den KORG-Netzwerk die im Laufe des MORO Regionalparks gewonnenen Erkenntnisse diskutieren und in interaktiven Runden die künftigen Aufgaben und Chancen des Instruments Regionalpark vertiefen möchten.
